The E. J. Hungerford Block, 228 Court Street

Built during a time of tremendous new construction in the city of Watertown, the Hungerford Block, like many “Block” buildings of the era, served as a multi-use building.  Commercial ventures, such as The Liberty Restaurant, later Tufo’s in the 1960’s, The Penguin Card Shop and Smiths Supplies, would occupy the ground floor with apartments, some originally with six rooms, above.

The Hungerford Block sat across the street from the S&B Diner, The Liberty Theater and the Adams Building and next to the Globe.  The building would be demolished sometime in the early to mid 1960’s to make room for a single-story retail store.
